Kumrat Valley Tour Packages 2026
We run five Kumrat packages, from a three-day trip to the forest at USD 205 to a seven-day Swat and Kumrat circuit at USD 385. All prices are per person.
The valley has three separate draws and confusing them is the most common planning mistake. There is Kumrat itself, where you camp among the deodar beside the Panjkora. There is Jahaz Banda, a high meadow two to four hours on foot above the jeep drop-off. And there is Katora Lake, another three to four hours beyond that. These are not one day out.
Every package below includes the Thal jeep, which is where most of the cost variation in a Kumrat trip actually sits.

The jeep is the difference between a sightseeing trip and a trekking trip. A basic return into the Kumrat forest costs far less than an extended hire covering Jahaz Banda and Katora. That is why the 3-day package is USD 205 and the 4-day trek is USD 240 despite being only one day longer. Both include the jeep you need.
Getting into the valley
Kumrat sits in Upper Dir, 370 to 385 km from Islamabad. The route runs on the Swat Motorway to Chakdara, then the N-45 through Dir to the village of Thal.
Thal is where the paved road ends. Beyond it, the last 20 to 30 km into the valley is rocky track with stream crossings, and a 4x4 is not optional. Sedans and crossovers do not make it, and every season a number of people find that out on the track. The jeep is included in all five packages, so you are not negotiating at the Thal stand.
While you are changing vehicles at Thal, the village has a wooden Jamia Masjid built in 1865 entirely without nails, an example of Pashtun timber craftsmanship. Almost everyone drives straight through. It takes twenty minutes and we will stop if you ask.
How hard are the treks?
Jahaz Banda. Two to four hours on foot from the jeep drop-off at Taki Top, climbing steadily through forest and across streams. A reasonably fit adult manages it; someone unfit finds it hard but possible. Horses and porters are available at the trailhead.
Katora Lake. A further three to four hours uphill from Jahaz Banda over rocky ground, reaching about 3,500 m. This one is genuinely strenuous. Most people stay overnight at Jahaz Banda and start early rather than attempting both in a day, which is exactly how our four-day package is built.
There is no reliable water source on the Katora stretch, weather changes fast above 3,000 m, and there is no mobile signal from the trailhead onwards. Tell someone your plan before you set off.
When to go
June to the end of September. Outside that window the tracks are unreliable and most accommodation closes. July and August are peak and the forest area gets genuinely busy on weekends. September is quieter and the light is better.
The Badgoi Pass route between Kalam and Kumrat has a shorter window again. We confirm the pass is open before departure and reroute via Dir at no extra charge if it is closed.

Is the Thal jeep included?
Yes, in all five packages. The last 20 to 30 km beyond Thal is rocky track with stream crossings and requires a 4x4. The jeep you need for your specific itinerary is included, which is part of why the trekking package costs more than a forest-only trip.
Can I take my own car to Kumrat?
As far as Thal, yes, on paved road. Beyond Thal you need a 4x4. Most people park in Thal and transfer to a local jeep.

How many days do I need for Kumrat?
Three at minimum, and that covers the forest and waterfall only. Four days gets you Jahaz Banda and Katora Lake properly. Given the drive is eight to nine hours each way, four is the better value.

Can I go from Kumrat to Kalam?
Yes, over Badgoi Pass at about 4,200 m, during its short open window. Our five-day package at USD 322 uses this route, and reverts to the Dir road at no extra charge if the pass is closed.

Is Kumrat suitable for families?
The forest area and waterfall, yes. Jahaz Banda and Katora Lake are demanding walks and not suitable for young children. Keep children well away from the Panjkora, which is fast and cold.
