We run 34 Skardu packages, from a three-day flight-in trip at USD 185 to a fourteen-day Hindu Kush and Karakoram circuit at USD 870. Skardu is the gateway to four of the world's fourteen peaks above 8,000 metres, which is why it draws a different traveller from Hunza.
Two things shape every Skardu trip: whether the flight operates, and whether Deosai is open. Every package below states which transport it uses, and the Deosai section explains the season.

About the Skardu flight. Across our current season around 85% of Islamabad to Skardu flights operated as scheduled and about 15% were cancelled or delayed, mostly in rain and fog. Every by-air package carries a road contingency at no extra charge, and we ask by-air guests to keep one buffer day. Do not book a same-day international connection on the return leg.

Fly Islamabad to Skardu in about an hour. This is the only realistic way to see Baltistan on limited leave, and it saves two days each way against the road.

Deosai: the constraint that catches people out
The plateau sits above 4,000 metres between Skardu and Astore, two to three hours from town by 4x4. Wildflowers in July, Himalayan brown bears if you are lucky, and Sheosar Lake at the far side.
Deosai is snowbound most of the year and typically opens only late June to mid-September. Arriving in late May expecting wildflowers means arriving to snow. If Deosai is your reason for coming, confirm the season before booking anything else.
Wildlife sightings are luck, not itinerary. Any operator promising you a bear is guessing.

If you are combining Skardu with Hunza, drive one leg. Both sit off the same highway corridor and you would otherwise backtrack.
What drives the price
Air or road. Three days by air at USD 185 is the cheapest way in, but airfare is added separately once your dates are confirmed. Six days by road at USD 385 includes everything except entry fees.
Hotel tier. The gap between a 6-day road package at USD 390 and the Hunza and Skardu Luxury tour at USD 650 is almost entirely accommodation. Shigar Fort and Khaplu Palace are genuine heritage hotels, priced accordingly.
Departure city. Trips starting from Lahore carry an additional USD 90.
Group size. Vehicle cost is fixed per vehicle, not per head. Four people pay considerably less each than two.

3 days by air: Skardu town and the Kachura lakes
Day 1. Fly Islamabad to Skardu. Afternoon at Kharpocho Fort and the Skardu bazaar. Overnight Skardu.
Day 2. Lower and Upper Kachura lakes, then Katpana cold desert in the late afternoon light. Overnight Skardu.
Day 3. Manthal Buddha Rock and Satpara Lake, then the return flight.
6 days by road: the standard Baltistan trip
Day 1. Islamabad to Chilas via the Karakoram Highway. Long day. Overnight Chilas.
Day 2. Chilas to Skardu along the Indus on the Skardu Road, stopping at the Nanga Parbat viewpoint. Overnight Skardu.
Day 3. Shigar Valley and Shigar Fort, returning to Skardu for the night.
Day 4. Kachura lakes, Katpana desert and Kharpocho Fort at sunset.
Day 5. Deosai plateau and Sheosar Lake by 4x4, in season. Otherwise Khaplu.
Day 6. Skardu to Chilas or Naran, continuing to Islamabad the following day.
12 days: Fairy Meadows, Skardu and Hunza
The full northern circuit at USD 685. Raikot Bridge for Fairy Meadows and the walk up to the meadow, then east along the Indus to Skardu for Shigar, Khaplu and the Kachura lakes, then north to Hunza and Khunjerab.
Twelve days, no backtracking, one vehicle throughout. This is the trip we recommend to anyone visiting northern Pakistan for the first and possibly only time.

Is transport private or shared?

Is Skardu better than Hunza?
Different trips. Hunza is easier to reach and the attractions sit closer together. Skardu is more dramatic, has the heritage fort hotels at Shigar and Khaplu, and is the only way to reach the Baltoro. With ten days or more you can do both, and our multi-region packages are built for exactly that.
Is Skardu suitable for families?
Yes. The town, the Kachura lakes, Katpana and the forts are all reached by vehicle with short walks. Deosai is a long day at altitude that many families skip. The 3 Days Shangrila Family package at USD 205 is the usual starting point.
How far in advance should I book?
For July and August, four to six weeks. For blossom in April and autumn in October, earlier, because the windows are short and hotels fill.
